8th 88th Annual conference on Haitian Health

Conference 2011- Proposed:

              Date: October 19-22, 2011

             Venue: Karibe Hotel, Port-Au-Prince, Haiti

Theme: Haiti Health Into the next Decade:  The case for Decentralization: Urban versus Rural

The 2011 conference will be a continuation of the last conference on Haiti. That conference provided a great wealth of information, allowed partnerships to be created and began an important dialogue among stakeholders from all sectors including the Diaspora.  We want to built on that effort and bring relevant issues that matter to you center stage into the discussion. Already we have listened and will address all the issues while delineating rural versus urban.  We are working to deliver a strong Mental Health track and looking at health improvement infrastructure issues as they related to the decentralization of the system.  We hope you will be with us as it will take the input of all of us to rebuild the healthcare system and improve the lives of Haitians.  Call for Abstracts will be out on February 25 .

ISSUES / COMMENTS / DISCUSSION

  1. Recommend to outsource partnership potential to Diaspora vs bringing the potential and make partnership  work in country
  2. There is a significant need to address the civil rights of the Haitian people before we can begin to consider addressing solutions for their health needs
  3. Why is the country facing a cholera outbreak considering Haiti has been under close monitoring for over 1 month?
  4. Identify strategies that will create funds to subsidize salaries and retain Human resources
    1. taxing Diaspora remittance to Haiti
    2. custom tax
    3. pledge – fund raising: $100 for every $1000 MSPP receives

Where do we go from Here?

  1. How do we establish and maintain a plan for rebuilding the health infrastructure of Haiti in the midst of political leadership transition
  2. What efforts and strategies are in place to provide health care to remote communities of newly displaced population
  3. How can we design and establish a long term sustainable system to collect (ID)funds for salaries to recruit, train, sustain and motivate our Human Resources.

Participants’ demographics (does not include presenters and MSPP staff)

83% of participants were 45 years or younger and 17% were 46 and older

58% females 48% males
